PRESIDENT BIDEN COMMUTES NEARLY ALL FEDERAL DEATH SENTENCES
President Biden, we, the wrongfully convicted death row exonerees of Witness to Innocence, say thank you for this historic and courageous decision that recognizes the flaws in our system and will have a lasting, positive impact on our justice system.
We are grateful to see that by commuting these federal death sentences, the President acknowledges that the death penalty has resulted in the execution of innocent people and runs counter to the belief in the dignity of all human life and the possibility of redemption. The decision also recognizes the harm capital prosecutions and executions inflict on corrections officials, the families of homicide victims, and impacted communities. With these commutations, the President understands that the federal death penalty has been an enormous drain on resources but has failed to deter crime or improve public safety. The death penalty does not make us safer, and it will always present the risk of executing innocent people like us.
At Witness to Innocence, we are thankful for this step, and we will continue to work to ensure that one day, the flawed and inhumane system of capital punishment is abolished everywhere for good.
