Exoneree workshop with West Palm Beach Public Defender's Office

Witness to Innocence death row exonerees Sabrina Butler-Smith, Ray Krone and Gary Drinkard spoke with public defenders from West Palm Beach and surrounding counties on April 14, 2023 to work together to prevent wrongful convictions. The event was part of Witness to Innocence’s Accuracy & Justice Program. The public defenders were interested in hearing stories of wrongful conviction in order to better serve their clients. Ms. Butler-Smith recalled “The hosts of the workshop said they are seeing a decrease in public defenders and part of the purpose of hearing from us death row exonerees was to give the public defenders some inspiration and motivation for how important their work is in defending people. A couple of people came up to me afterwards and said hearing our stories is exactly what they needed, and that it touched him to keep on fighting.”
