FILMS TO FIGHT THE DEATH PENALTY
It Could Happen To You transports viewers into a nightmare faced by by far too many - being sentenced to death for a crime you did not commit. To date, more than 190 people have been exonerated from a wrongful death sentence, but this number is just the tip of the iceberg. Many more innocent people have escaped execution through resentencing or plea deals that prevent them being counted among exonerees. Most frighteningly, there is no way to count how many innocent people have been executed - they are the invisible victims murdered by an unjust system. The only way to ensure an innocent person is never executed again, is to end the death penalty.
Out of a shared mission to ignite educated conversations about the death penalty, Witness to Innocence and Virgin Unite have partnered on the It Could Happen To You films, produced by Hidden Light Productions. We hope Sabrina and Randal's stories inspire viewers to learn more, educate others, and take action. We are releasing the films on World Day Against the Death Penalty 2021 in solidarity with the worldwide death penalty abolition movement and alongside a landmark announcement from Richard Branson's Business Leaders Against the Death Penalty campaign, and our partners at the Responsible Business Initiative for Justice, that more than 150 business leaders have joined a call to end to the death penalty. We join with them in urging governments everywhere to end the death penalty.
